Magicians sneak up in Hallyburton Johnstone Shield

A rare bout of wet weather across our drought-hit country heightened nerves today as three teams competed for the sole remaining spot available in this season's Grand Final. That race for the remaining qualifying spot is now down to two.

Heading into today's penultimate round at Seddon Park, competition leader Northern Spirit had already locked in its first-ever berth in the Women's List A national final, but has yet to secure home hosting rights.

Either the Auckland Hearts (playing the Spirit in Hamilton in back-to-back matches this weekend), the Canterbury Magicians or defending champions the Central Hinds (playing each other at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth) could have joined them... pending today's results.

A maximum of 10 points (including two bonus points) was available to each team from this weekend's twin rounds.

The Saturday Seddon Park clash has since been washed out, however, conferring two points each to the Spirit and Hearts - ending the Central Hinds' title defence hopes by bumping them off the points table.

The Magicians then nailed a bonus-point win in their rain-affected three-wicket win against the Hinds in New Plymouth, and if they can do it again tomorrow they will have the Hearts sweating on their net run rate differential.
The Hearts now also know they need only to beat the Spirit this Sunday with a bonus point or, if no bonus point, a higher net run rate to secure a home Grand Final.
Game on!

RAIN THE WINNER IN TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH

Needing just one win from the last two games to seal their own spot in the Grand Final - or, shared points if the concurrent game in New Plymouth became washed out, Auckland Hearts captain Regina Lili'i sent in Northern Spirit at Hamilton's Seddon Park in a reduced 49-over game. However, rain interrupted the innings at 11/0 in the seventh over and no further play was possible.

NO JOY IN TARADISE FOR HINDS

Having already been in the danger zone needing results in Auckland to go their way, defending champions the Central Hinds were sent in for the weather-delayed, penultimate must-win at Pukekura Park.

After overnight rain resulted in an early lunch, both the Hinds and Canterbury Magicians were anxious to get on the park before the ground dried out sufficiently for Magicians captain Frankie Mackay to win the toss in a reduced 36-over contest. Jess Simmons and Gabby Sullivan then claimed two big wickets inside the first nine overs with Jess Watkin and Hinds captain Anlo van Deventer both back in the pavilion at 27 for two.

With the match in Hamilton subsequently abandoned, the Hinds could still spoil the Magicians' last shot at qualifying, but the Magicians turned the tables as they chased down their 156-target with four overs to spare.

MOOD DAMP IN DEAD RUBBER

Weather likewise hit Dunedin's dead rubber between the Otago Sparks and Wellington Blaze at University of Otago Oval, where an early lunch was also taken. Sparks captain Bella James then won the toss and elected to bat with the hosts reaching 11 for no loss before rain further interrupted in the fourth over, in a game reduced to 38 overs. Further wet weather saw the match shortened to 27 overs but that was long enough for the Blaze to pocket a nine-wicket DLS victory.
