Harmison quits one-dayers

English paceman Steve Harmison has pulled the pin on his one-day cricketing career after he was left out of the 16-man squad to take on New Zealand and Australia in the VB Series starting next month.

However, Michael Vaughan has been included in the squad for the one-day series which will serve as the last serious hitout before the World Cup kicks off in March.

Geraint Jones, who was left out of October's Champions Trophy, will join Harmison in the stands for the series' entirety following three uninspiring performances in the Ashes series so far.

Harmison indicated that he would retire from the one-day arena at the conclusion of world cricket's marquee event in the Caribbean, however he has hastened his decision following Thursday's omission.

"After careful consideration and having taken advice from several people who have been close to me throughout my career, I have decided to retire from one-day international cricket with immediate effect," said Harmison.

"This has been a difficult decision but I want to play at the highest level for as long as I can and believe that concentrating solely on Test cricket is the best way forward for me during the next phase of what will hopefully be a long England career."

England is approaching the upcoming triangular series with an experimental frame of mind and an obvious eye on the World Cup.

Cult figure Monty Panesar has been included in the one-day squad for the first time while 36-year-old wicketkeeper Paul Nixon and Chris Tremlett have both been plucked out of obscurity to join Panesar as surprise inclusions.

Vaughan's call-up comes after proving his fitness and overcoming knee problems which have dogged the majority of his current calendar year.

"Michael has been included in the one-day squad subject to fitness," explained chairman of selectors David Graveney.

"He has made excellent progress with his recovery from injury, but we feel that it would not be appropriate to announce the captaincy of the one-day side at this stage and will delay any announcement until after the Test series."

The VB Series kicks off at the MCG on January 12 when Australia and England lock horns.
