Guptill gunning for number one

The HRV Cup is just around the corner and Auckland ACES and BLACKCAPS batsman Martin Guptill is looking forward to showing what he’s got in the shortest form of the game.

Guptill hit an impressive 157 against the Wizards on Monday, smashing 20 boundaries in the process and he hopes he can continue that form onto the HRV Cup in a few days’ time. “It’s great to be back in form and I was hitting the ball cleanly,” he said. “Making 150 is a fantastic personal milestone and I’ve pushed hard to get big runs and it’s great to finally get there.”

Although he’s proved his worth for the Aces during the recent one day competition, Guptill is hoping a number of other players will step up during the HRV Cup. “There’s a lot of Twenty20 cricket coming up and more room for guys to show their stuff. Having the BLACKCAPS back is going to strengthen the competition.”

A spot at the Champion’s League is the reward for the team who takes home the HRV Cup, and it’s certainly something Guptill would like to have the chance to play in. “I think it’s at the back of everyone’s mind, and it would be great to get the opportunity to play in different conditions.”

The HRV Cup starts in early January and the Aucklander is looking forward to the big crowds and the excitement around the Twenty20 format. “Everything happens so quickly and it’s going to be a great day out at the cricket for everyone,” he concluded.
