Gough named in England squad

Veteran Darren Gough's World Cup dream remains alive after he was named in England's provisional squad for this year's ICC Champions Trophy.

Gough, who hasn't played for England's one day team since July last year, was named as part of a 30-man squad announced by England selectors on Thursday.

The 35-year-old has 156 one-day caps for England, and has been an integral part of Essex's limited-overs success.

England chairman of selectors David Graveney admitted it was this form in the domestic competition that led to Gough getting a call-up.

"Darren has had quite a lot to say in the last couple of months about the selectors not considering him," he said.

"The one thing that has changed from last year is that Darren has played all the one-day cricket Essex have asked him to and he has performed exceptionally well."

Selectors have also named a number of players currently battling with injury in the hope they will be fully fit come October.

"We have included a number of players who are currently recovering from injury in this provisional squad: James Anderson, Ian Blackwell, Andrew Flintoff, Ashley Giles and Liam Plunkett," Graveney said.

"The medical advice we have received is that there is a good chance that they will be available for the tournament but we will need to review their progress before the squad has to be reduced to 14 on September 7."

"We have kept faith with the bulk of the squad who appeared against Sri Lanka as we feel there were encouraging individual performances in that series despite the disappointing results overall."

While all but one player from England's recent series against Sri Lanka have been named, the squad also includes five uncapped players.

Ravi Bopara, Stuart Broad, Mal Loye, Graham Onions and Michael Yardy have all yet to play at international level.

Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar was left out of the squad despite England coach Duncan Fletcher calling him the top finger spinner in international cricket.

While Andrew Strauss is currently leading the England side, should Flintoff recover in time for the Trophy, a decision on the captaincy will have to be made.
