Since its inception during the 2016-17 Dunedin summer, “Girls Smash” cricket has been a hit with girls in school years 3-6.
The programme, devised by the Otago Cricket Community Team, allows for girls who are new to the game to get a taste of cricket in a low-pressure & inclusive setting.
‘Game Leaders’ help to facilitate an environment of fun & learning through their ongoing encouragement & game management – the odd tip makes life easy for all players involved.
Music is blasting through the speakers, t-shirts & playing equipment are provided, and most importantly – the cricket balls are soft, and easy to hit out of the park!
Teams play a six-aside, pairs cricket format – allowing for all players to receive equal opportunity, and for the parents to get home for the 6pm news.
And the best news yet is that… Girls Smash may be coming to a town near you!
In the 2022-23 cricket season, Girls Smash will be run in; Otago, Canterbury, Marlborough, Wellington (called Summer Smash) and Auckland!
