Gilchrist jumped ahead of Indian batsman Mahendra Dhoni and Australian skipper Ricky Ponting after a solid showing in the three-match limited overs series in Bangladesh.
The attacking left-hander made 76 and 32 in the first two games against the Asian side and did not bat in the final match of Australia's 3-0 whitewash.
Gilchrist has a career average of just over 36 on the strength of 14 ODI tons and 45 half-centuries with his cavalier style a trademark at the top of the Australian order.
The West Australian now holds an advantage of three rating points over Dhoni, while Ponting's 19 runs in the two matches he played in Bangladesh sees him slip to third position.
Australia, the reigning World Cup champions, now have a remarkable four of the top-five players in the short version of the game, with Andrew Symonds (fourth) and Michael Hussey (fifth) joining their team leaders.
Symonds was in sparkling form in the second game against Bangladesh, batting patiently for a match-winning 103 not out.
The Australian team is not represented in the top-three in the bowling rankings however, with Glenn McGrath in fourth place the best of the No.1 line-up in the world.
