ROUND FIVE

Christchurch Girls' High School 133-5 (C Liddington 70*, J Hull 29, L Easterbrook 2-18) beat Takapuna Grammar School 108-9 (R Worrall 40, A McKissock 3-11, G Edge 3-13, L Stead 2-8), Fitzherbert #1

Christchurch Girls’ High School have put in a convincing win beating Takapuna Grammar School. Batting first, Christchurch opener Casey Liddington once again scored big, staying in the entire innings and finishing on 70*. Joey Hull added to Liddington’s score adding another 29 runs into the mix, resulting in a total of 133-5 to round up Christchurch’s innings.  With the ball, Takapuna’s Libby Easterbrook took two wickets for 18 runs. In reply, Ruby Worrell had a solid innings being dismissed for 40. No matter how hard Takapuna tried to get runs on the board, nothing could slow the Christchurch bowling side with Abby McKissock finishing on three for 11, Georgia Edge also taking three wickets for 13 runs and Libby Stead assisting taking two wickets for just eight runs. Christchurch moves into this afternoon’s finals

St Matthew’s Collegiate 122-4 (J Hollard 59, E McLeod 27, N Wright 2-25) beat St Hilda’s Collegiate School 83-8 (A Duncan 20, E Cohr 2-8, O Bartlett 2-16), Fitzherbert #2

St Matthew’s have won their final game of pool play after beating St Hilda’s Collegiate by 39 runs. St Matthew’s batted first making a high scoring 122 runs for only 4 wickets. Opener Jesse Hollard reached her half century, making 59 while Emma McLeod added an extra 27 runs to their total. St Hilda’s Nova Wright stood out with the ball taking 2 wickets for 25 runs. In reply St Hilda’s opener Anna Duncan was tasked with delivering a big innings, however the St Matts attack was lethal making run scoring difficult. Duncan the top run scorer from the Dunedin side, was dismissed for 20 by Ocean Bartlett, going on to take another wicket for 16 runs. Ella Cohr also delivering with the ball taking 2-8 and finishing St Hilda’s innings with only 83 runs on the board. St Matts will move into the finals against Christchurch Girls this afternoon.

Tauranga Girls’ College 58-9 (SJ Stone 17, H Kells 2-6, A Turner 2-6) lost to Hutt Valley High School 59-6 (H Kells 19, A Clegg 3-21, N Patel 2-9), Manawaroa #6

Hutt Valley High have claimed their second victory of the Gillette Venus Cup against Tauranga Girls’ College. Tauranga Girls’ won the toss and opted to bat first. With a collapse in the top order, Sarah-Jane Stone was their top run scorer adding 17 points to the sides 58-9 total. Hutt Valley Highs Hannah Kells and Amy Turner both worked in harmony slowing the batting side and each taking two wickets for six runs. Kells shone again with the bat, putting a helpful 19 runs on the board, including 3 boundaries.  Amy Clegg was handy with the ball taking 3 for 21 while Nensi Patel continuing her stunning campaign took two wickets for 9 runs. Results from the final round have meant that the Tauranga will come up against Hutt Valley High School in their game for 3rd and 4th.

1st and 2nd Playoff

St Matthew’s Collegiate School all out for 66 (O Bartlett 30, K Hastings 6-13, M Martin 2-14) lost to Christchurch Girls’ High School 68-1 off 11.1 overs (C Liddington 32*, J Hull 27), Fitzherbert Park #1

After 2 years of placing second in the Gillette Venus Cup and a successful campaign during the 2020 season, Christchurch Girls' High School have claimed the title after beating St Matthew’s Collegiate by 9 wickets. Both sides have shown brilliant form throughout the week with some high scores with both the bat and ball. St Matt’s batting first, lost some early wickets after Christchurch’s Kate Hastings took the highest tournament scoring number dismissing six batters for just 13 runs. This put St Matt’s Captain Ocean Bartlett in line to score big, a total of 30 much needed runs boosted their score, but it wasn’t enough as Maggie Martin, also on fire took two more wickets for 14, dismissing the rest of the batting order for 66 after 14 overs. After a very successful fight with the ball, Christchurch Girls then went on to chase down, what looked to be an achievable target. Their top order batsmen Casey Liddington took the Christchurch high score with 32* while Joey Hull scored a remaining 27, leaving Georgia Edge to only need two runs to win, reaching their target in just 11.1 overs. Congratulations to Christchurch Girls’ High School on winning the 2020 Gillette Venus Cup.

3rd and 4th Playoff

Hutt Valley High School 130-5 (A Hamilton 50, N Codyre 33*, N Patel 2-25) beat Tauranga Girls College all out for 72 after 19.2 overs (N Patel 23, A Turner 3-7, H Turner 2-8, H Kells 2-8, N Codyre 2-9), Fitzherbert #2

Hutt Valley High School have finished the tournament in the bronze medal position after beating Tauranga Girls College by 58 runs. Hutt Valley batted first making a commanding 130 runs off their 20 overs, opener Antonia Hamilton (50) and Natasha Codyre (33*) batted excellently and top scored for Hutt Valley. MVP of the tournament, Nensi Patel, stood up for her team in this game and throughout the tournament. Patel showed her expert skills with bat and ball in an attempt to take the game away from Hutt Valley. After taking 2 wickets for 25 runs in the beginning of the Hutt Valley inning she showed her class scoring 23 runs to help reach the tough Hutt Valley target. The Turner cousins, Amy and Hanna, were influential in Hutts success with Amy taking an impressive 3-7 and Hanna taking 2-8. Hannah Kells also aided in this outcome taking 2-8, with Natasha Codyre showing her skill taking the final wicket adding to her 2-9 score. Both these team were evenly matched throughout the competition with both teams showing tremendous skill over the week and should be proud to finish in the top four.

5th and 6th Playoff

St Hilda’s Collegiate 82-9 (G Shanahan 4-14, K Scott 3-21) lost to Takapuna Grammar School 85-3 off 13.4 (R Worrall 22*, A Browning 20, R Jaswal 20*), Manawaroa Park #6

Takapuna Grammar School have escaped leaving the tournament with the wooden spoon after beating St Hilda’s Collegiate by 7-wickets in the 5th and 6th play-off. Georgie Shanahan stood out with the ball for Takapuna taking 4 wickets for 14 runs, while teammate Kennedy Scott took another 3 wickets for 21 runs, the strong bowling side dismissed St Hilda’s for 82. In reply, it only took Takapuna’s batters 13.4 overs to chase down the total, Ruby Worrall (22*), Anna Browning (20) and Rishika Jaswal (20*) guided Takapuna Grammar School to 5th place and a successful first visit to the Gillette Venus Cup.
