From South Africa to Southland

New Zealand is known as the land of the long white cloud and it was also known as the land of opportunity for our forefathers. These days, New Zealand also offers bountiful opportunities to a number of young, talented cricketers from South Africa hoping to play at an international level.

BLACKCAP and Wellington Firebird Grant Elliott would be the most well known South African playing for the top team. He came to New Zealand six years ago in the hope of furthering his career. After doing well on the domestic scene and becoming a New Zealand resident, Elliott is now an integral part of the international squad.

One young South African looking at following in Elliot’s footsteps is Otago Volts strike bowler Neil Wagner.

Wagner made the move for the 2008/09 season in with the view to grabbing an opportunity to play international cricket from within the New Zealand domestic scene. He spoke with Canterbury’s South African-born Kruger van Wyk and Johannes Myburgh about what it is like to come to New Zealand to play and they were enthusiastic about the opportunities. He liked what he heard about Otago and was soon en route to Dunedin.

He said it was a big decision to leave his home land; however he has never looked back.

The hardest things for Wagner were leaving his family behind in South Africa to pursue his cricket dreams, and learning a new language. Afrikaans is his native tongue, but the kiwi lingo has crept into his vocabulary. “I’ve been working hard on my English and when I first arrived here I didn’t say too much and kept quiet,” he said. “But I’ve learnt a lot and I’m adapting to the different culture. I’m really enjoying it. It’s definitely a learning curve!”

His family is still back in Pretoria; however they have been very supportive of Wagner’s drive and passion for cricket. This summer his partner is heading to New Zealand to support Wagner and spend some time enjoying the natural beauty of the country.

Wagner’s goal is to continue to do well within the Otago team and gain experience within the game in hope of playing for the BLACKCAPS when he finally becomes a fully fledged Kiwi in three years time.

Wagner on…

His secret talent

Wagner is a very talented carpenter. He said he loves using his hands to create things from cupboards to wine racks, chairs and tables. “I’ve got a real passion for that.”

Dunedin

Wagner has confessed his love for the southern city. He said he loves the feel of the city and when the sun is out it is the best place in New Zealand. “You can feel the student vibe and it feels like you are on holiday. It’s small and easy to get around. The people are outstanding. They are friendly.”

Coaching

When Wagner moved to New Zealand he had to give up his studies at The University of Pretoria. He had completed two years of a sports science degree and he is hoping he can implement what he learnt to help cricket in New Zealand. “I’ve coached cricket in South Africa and England. I love working with kids and the other guys and giving something back to the game.”
