Freddy stays positive

England captain Andrew Flintoff says his side is still upbeat despite Friday's 166-run loss against the Prime Minister's XI in Canberra.

England was dismissed for 181 inside 39 overs after the Aussies posted an imposing 5-347 thanks largely to a century from opener Phil Jaques.

"I think it's fair to say we were outplayed by the Prime Minister's XI. They played some good cricket," he said.

"In the dressing room, the confidence is fine. The lads are still upbeat, we've just got to keep working hard."

"On previous tours we've started slowly and been beaten in warm-up games but we've bounced back quickly."

"Today was a one-day game and we're not going to get too despondent about it. Next week we've got the New South Wales game, in the longer form, and then we've got South Australia."

Jaques plundered the English attack, helping himself to 112 off 110 balls that set the tone for the innings. Shaun Marsh belted 78 not out and Victorian Cameron White hit 30 off 14 balls to steer the hosts to their massive total.

The tourists were never in the hunt after losing two wickets inside the first seven overs while only posting 24 runs.

"I think the lads are aware of what's happened today," Flintoff said.

"Sometimes in one-day cricket, you're looking to score runs, you're looking to take to the ball on a little bit more, but sometimes you play shots that you probably wouldn't necessarily do in the longer form of the game."

England get its first taste of the 'longer form' of the game against New South Wales next week followed by a match against South Australia, before its Ashes defense gets underway in Brisbane on November 23.

On a positive note, Flintoff and Ashley Giles both got through the game unscathed after long injury layoffs.

Flintoff bowled his full quota of 10 overs taking 1-55 and Giles took 1-53 off eight.

"I started well and bowled three spells," Flintoff said.

"I came back strong, my body felt good and my ankle's pulled up nicely, so from my own personal point of view, I was pleased with my 10 overs."

England begins its second tour match against New South Wales on Sunday.
