The Ford Trophy in numbers — round one

EIGHT

Number of sixes pumped by Sean Solia as he slammed a century on Ford Trophy debut. He belted a whopping 152 that was, wait for it, the sixth highest one-day score for the Aces, ever. In his first match! Here’s the list if you don’t believe us, plus all the people at Eden Park Outer Oval saw it.

161    Tim McIntosh 2010/11
159*   Lou Vincent 2010/11
157     Mark Chapman 2015/16
156    Martin Guptill 2009/10
153    Lou Vincent 2010/11
152    Sean Solia 2016/17
151    Colin Munro 2012/13

SIX

Number of wickets Lockie Ferguson took to back up his mate Sean Solia and reduce Northern Districts to rubble. Fully charged with confidence after his opening spell in the BLACKCAPS, Ferguson had figures of four for five when he put himself on a hat-trick with some serious heat in just the seventh over. He came back on at the death to wrap up a career best 6-27. ND probably didn’t get a chance to see what hit ’em.

SIXTEEN

Number of Kiwi bowlers who have now taken six or more wickets in a domestic List A match. It's not every day you see a six-for. The record is Willie Watson's 7-23 in the 1980s.

FIVE

Number of points at the top of the table. That would be the Aces, after their landslide win scored them a bonus point to put them on the very top.

161

Margin of victory, yes still talking about the Auks. That’s as many as Tim McIntosh got all by himself that time. But that was then and this is now and today’s it’s a new Aces record against ND, and one of their Biggest. Wins. Ever. as the third biggest margin by the Aces against anyone.

ELEVEN

Number of players on Ford Trophy debut today. There were six in the Eden Park match alone — Solia, Ben Horne, Raja Sandhu for the Aces; Zak Gibson, Freddy Walker, Peter Bocock for ND. Jack Boyle and Chad Bowes were on Ford Trophy debut for Canterbury. Christi Viljoen and Gregor Croudis were on Ford Trophy debut for the Volts. Scott Borthwick was on Ford Trophy debut for the Firebirds. Hamish Marshall and Hamish Bennett were on Firebirds Ford Trophy debut as well, although they have played plenty of Ford Trophy for other teams. Captaining a team on technical debut... shot Hamish Marshall.

TWO

Number of Canterbury captains named in one round. Incumbent Ford Trophy captain Andy Ellis was in the 12 but damaged his thumb so he had to sit out the game in Rangiora. Peter Fulton took back the reins and scored a 50 in a clutch last-over win against the champion Stags. Bit of a bummer for Ellis who scored his maiden Ford Trophy century in his last outing against them, in the Grand Final last year. He probably wasn’t too unhappy though — 1-zip for 2017 despite a truck full of injuries to the attack.

NINETEEN

Age of Josh Clarkson who gets his long levers swinging and puts it out of the park. The Nelson youngster had one of the highest strike rates in McDonald’s Super Smash (only Colin de Grandhomme’s was bigger) and he’s taken that pinch-hitting straight into the 50 overs with a career-best maiden half century plus, an unbeaten 70 off just 43 balls. Pity it didn’t win the match for the Stags.

5033

Number of runs Jesse Ryder has in List A (domestic 50 overs) cricket now. Boom!

123

The new Stags second-wicket record against the Cantabs after Ryder (68) and George Worker (90) smashed it today. The previous record of 119 had stood for 17 years (Mathew Sinclair & Craig Spearman in 2000/01)

302

Number of runs the Volts put on the Uni Oval scoreboard. Four half centuries. It equalled the third-highest List A score ever by the Volts at their home ground in Dunners. And they still lost to the Firebirds. #BirdsOnFire #Ouch #Scorched

190

Number of List A matches Jeetan Patel has now played. That's more than half of a year of your life spent playing domestic 50-over cricket. Celebrated with a 12-ball 25 and took the top order wicket of Brad Wilson in the Firebirds' epic win.

TWO

Number of days before round two on Wednesday. Stags v Firebirds in Napier, Aces v Volts at Eden Park and Canterbury v ND at Seddon Park in Hamilton all at 11am.
