A new level of incentive for our leading domestic talents

Landmark for domestic games as prizemoney launched

New Zealand’s six major association teams will compete for $180,000 in prizemoney over all three competitions this summer — including a $100,000 stake for Georgie Pie Super Smash T20, which starts this afternoon in New Plymouth.

The initiative will be the first time that NZC has offered prize money for domestic competitions, with the Ford Trophy one-day competition and the Plunket Shield – brought to you by Budget Rental – each being incentivised to the tune of $40,000.

NZC chief executive David White said he was delighted the country’s domestic professional players would have an opportunity to be rewarded for top performances in all three formats, over and above the chance to win titles.

“Prizemoney has long been a part of professional sport and it’s good to recognise the importance of our domestic competitions,” said Mr White.

“In doing this we underline the value of our three domestic formats and, not least, the value of the players who contest them.”

New Zealand Cricket Players Association chief executive Heath Mills welcomed the introduction of the prizemoney pool.

“Prizemoney is an important component in most competitions around the world, and provides additional reward to the players who win our premier cricket competitions,” said Mr Mills.

“We’re delighted with this addition to the professional contracting environment in our domestic game here in New Zealand.”
