England strongly poised

England has once again dominated Sri Lanka on the opening day of the second Test at Edgbaston.

Visiting skipper Mahela Jayawardene's decision to bat first was quick to backfire as his side crumbled to 82-8.

This sparked a much-needed partnership for the ninth-wicket between Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga as the Sri Lankans toiled hard before eventually succumbing for 141 all out.

Liam Plunkett was the pick of the England bowlers, the young speedster snaring 3-43.

In response to the meagre Sri Lankan total, England openers Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Strauss put on 56 before star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan had Trescothick caught behind for 27.

Scarcely ten minutes later, Strauss followed his opening partner back to the pavilion after being run out on 30.

With Kevin Pietersen and Alastair Cook at the crease, the classy batsmen soon took up where their predecessors had left off and the pair put on another 56 runs before Cook was trapped lbw to Muralitharan just before stumps.

Pietersen ended the opening day on 30 not out with Matthew Hoggard also at the crease on two not out leaving England comfortably poised on 138-3.
