England secures victory

England has secured a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka on the fourth afternoon of the second Test at Edgbaston.

Chasing a target of 78 for victory, the home side faltered early, losing four quick wickets before an unbeaten 34 from Alastair Cook got them through.

Sri Lanka commenced the fourth day on 5-194, a lead of 40 runs, and it took England just 55 minutes to exact the first blow when skipper Andrew Flintoff had Farveez Maharoof out caught and bowled.

The rest of the wickets followed quickly as Liam Plunkett completed the rout with 3-17 as the Sri Lankans were dismissed for 231.

Michael Vandort proved to be the pick of the Sri Lankan batsmen with a well-earned 105, just his second Test century.

However, the gritty innings soon accounted for little as England, after failing to clinch victory from a dominant position at Lord's in the first Test, sealed the result.
