England romped to 318-3 on the opening day of its first Test with Sri Lanka at Lord's today.
The signs do not look good for the visitors as England looks to mount a huge score in near perfect conditions.
Opener Marcus Trescothick marked his return to the side with his 14th Test century, scoring 106 on a day dominated by the home top-order after captain Andrew Flintoff won the toss and batted first.
Trescothick and Andrew Strauss (48) put on 86 for the first wicket, before Alistair Cook joined him to add another 127 for the second wicket.
Cook scored 89 before falling to Farveez Maharoof and the second new ball.
Trescothick survived an lbw appeal from Muralitharan's bowling when on 28. He was finally undone when edging to slip.
Kevin Pietersen, who was caught off a no ball from Maharoof, was 54 not out at stumps with Matthew Hoggard on two in his role as nightwatchman.
Muttiah Muralitharan was the main strike force for the Sri Lankans sending down 27 overs and removing both openers at a cost of 69 runs. Surprisingly in his long career it was the first time Muralitharan had bowled at Lord's in a Test match.
