England faces long haul

England is in trouble after three days of the fourth Test against Pakistan at the Oval.

It ended the day on 78-1, after Pakistan posted 504 for a first innings lead of 331 runs.

Mohammad Yousuf's 128 dominated the Pakistan innings but there was good support from Faisal Iqbal who was unbeaten on 58. But each of the lower order batsmen made it into double figures, apart from No. 11 Mohammad Asif who was dismissed for a duck.

Steve Harmison bowled 30.5 overs to finish with 4-125 while Matthew Hoggard took 3-124. They provided one ray of encouragement on a dull day by snapping up three wickets for 19 runs just after a rain break.

England's second innings started badly when Marcus Trescothick fell for four when the score was eight.

However, Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook combined and scored 37 and 33 respectively by stumps. They were sorely tested as Mohammad Asif found late swing and kept the pressure on.

Bad light ended play early.
