England call up Lewis and Mahmood

England's problems with its pace bowlers has resulted in uncapped pacemen Jon Lewis and Sajid Mahmood being named in England's 13 for the first Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's, starting on Thursday.

Steve Hamison (shin splints), Simon Jones (knee) and James Anderson (back) are all injured.

Lewis, 30, took nine wickets in England A's 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka while Mahmood took seven wickets in a Lancashire win over Ken.

England's selection chairman David Graveney told BBC Sport: "Jon has had a tremendous start to the season, as he has the last three of four seasons, so there has been plenty of speculation about him playing.

"We can't pick every player that performs in county cricket but Sajid's selection sends a message out that if you perform the selectors will notice."

No decision has been made on the likely bowling combination and off spinner Monty Panesar faces a nervous wait to see if he will be included in the playing XI.

Alistair Cook will bat at No.3 and Ian Bell is only in the side as batting cover.

Panesar said: "It will be a dream come true if I get a chance, to play at Lord's in front of a home crowd will be fantastic.

"It depends on the conditions but I've been bowling with good rhythm. The wickets are not as dry so I've just tried to get the ball in the right areas.

"At Lord's some turn and some don't. If you get it in the right area they skid on so you try try to vary your pace and stay patient."

Graveney said Cook deserved his chance after his performances in India.

The squad is: Andrew Flintoff (captain), Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss, Alistair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Geraint Jones, Monty Panesar, Liam Plunkett, Matthew Hoggard, Sajid Mahmood, Ian Bell, Jon Lewis.
