The Afghan All Stars pose on Hagley Oval - CMCA

Dreams come true for Christchurch Ethnic Cricketers

After three weeks of pool play before Christmas, the Christchurch Metro Cricket ‘All Nations Festival’ finals day was held on Sunday 17 February.

It was not any normal day for the players concerned - thanks to the Hagley Park Ground Staff, the participants had the once in a lifetime opportunity to play on Hagley Oval.

The 5th/6th playoff started at 9am as the fog cleared to a fine day, with the Doon Tigers accounting for Placeme.

Second up at 12pm it was the Cornered Tigers against the Christchurch Daredevils, with the game coming down to the final ball, where a six was required for the Cornered Tigers to finish in 3rd place.

The ball was dispatched onto the embankment, completing a famous victory for the Cornered Tigers.

At 3pm the final started, with seasons winners the Afghan All Stars up against the Christchurch Super Kings.

The Afghan All Stars batted first, posting 160 from their 20 overs. The Super Kings were on track during the first 10 overs, but some tight bowling from the Allstars in the second half of the innings ensured they retained the title with a 30-run victory.

To compete at Canterbury’s premier cricket oval was a dream come true said winning captain, Harry Khan.

“It was a dream come true for the Afghan community to have their match on Hagley Oval and to win the title put the icing on the cake”

Christchurch Metro extend thanks to the Christchurch Multicultural Council for being a valued partner, The Rata Foundation, Christchurch City Council and Ethnic Communities Development Fund for helping make the event possible.
