Scores at the end of play Day 5 19^th January 2009, 2nd day of two-day games.

Central Districts vs Northern Districts

Central Districts; 1^st Innings 194 all out of 73 over’s (J Steward 51, B Wheeler 35, William Young 33, M Thomas 5-17, J Wilkinson 2-27, R Fitz-John 2-46) to Northern Districts; 1^st Innings 53 all out of 27 over’s (Ross Fitz-John 24, B Small 4-9, B Wheeler 2-2, D Lubbe 2-10) and Northern Districts; 2^nd Innings 278-6 of 100 over’s (A Vodnala 117, A Abraham 64, B Small 2-29, T Haggis 2-69)

Northern Districts batted the full day on day 2 in their 2^nd innings to deny CD outright victory. Ash Vodnala batting most of the day for a patient 117 of 265 balls, he was well supported by Ashley Abraham who scored 64 together adding 133 for the 2^nd wicket. The CD bowlers stuck well to their task giving very little away, Ted Haggis bowling 27 over’s and taking 2-69 and Bevan Small 2-29 of 13 over’s being the most successful.

Auckland vs Otago

Otago; 1^st Innings 291 (B Cant 63, M Hunter 58, M Collins 40, T Ellis 3-59, T Brown 2-21, E Herd 2-43)to Auckland; 1^st Innings 81off 41.4 over’s (T Ellis 23, C Cachopa 21, C Ware 4-33, K Russell 2-9) and Auckland; 2^nd Innings 289-3 off 61 over’s (C Cacopa 140no, C Elton 69no, D Duke 2-34)

Resuming overnight at 28-4, Auckland struggled to 81 all out with only Craig Cachopa(21) and Tom Ellis (23) nudging the score along. The Otago bowling attack was well led by Christopher Ware with 4-33 of 12 over’s, he was well supported by all the Otago bowlers especially Kane Russell with 2-9 of 5 over’s. Having been forced to follow on Auckland responded very well with 289-3 of 61 over’s, Craig Cacopa scoring a fluent 140 no of only 119 over’s including four 6’s and twenty two 4’s. The Otago bowlers struggled on a hot day with Daniel Duke finishing with the best return of 2-34. Otago only gaining points for a first innings win.

Wellington vs Canterbury

Canterbury; 1^st Innings 283 (T Latham 120, M Henry 49, H Nicholls 43, L Boydajian 3-60, M Taylor 2-25, T Gibson 2-55, H Wright 2-69) and Canterbury; 2^nd Innings 110-1 of 16 over’s (B Ward 46 no, C McConchie 35no, C McLean 1-11) to Wellington; 1^st Innings 175-9 dec of 63 over’s (M Taylor 31, S Lawson 62 no, M Henry 3-47, T Walsh 2-16, T Van Woerkom 2-34) and Wellington; 2^nd Innings 186 (N Ward 58, J Joseph 35, T Van Woerkon 7-76)

Wellington never looked like taking 1^st innings points struggling to 175-9 before declaring, Sam Lawson top scored with 62 with Matt Taylor contributing 31.Canterbury came in and scored quickly to set Wellington a winning total of 219, Ben Ward and Cole McConchie adding an unbeaten 88, the only wicket taker being Charlie McClean with 1-11 of 4 over’s. Chasing 219 to win from 53 over’s Wellington had made a good effort finishing 33 runs short. Nick Ward opening the innings making 58 from 79 balls adding 48 for the opening wicket with L Scully. Josh Joseph gave Wellington hope in the lower order hitting an entertaining 35 including 6 fours. Theo Van Woerkom taking tournament best figures of 7-76 from 20.1 over’s doing the damage for Canterbury giving them first innings points and an outright win.

Central Districts vs Northern Districts

After winning the toss and electing to bat CD made the worst possible start losing a wicket in their 1^st over. Against a disciplined ND, CD struggled to gain control losing wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings. Jonathon Stewart batting at number 7 scoring 51 of 72 balls supported by Ben Wheeler (35) enabled CD to reach 194 losing their last 4 wickets for 7 runs. Mattie Thomas was the star performer with the ball taking 5-17 of 19 over’s including 10 maidens, Ross Fitz-John and Jonny Wilkinson both chipping in with 2 wickets each.Northern Districts made a disastrous reply to CD’s modest 194 being dismissed for 53. The CD opening bowlers Bevan Small 4-9 and Ben Wheeler 2-2 destroyed the ND top order at one stage reducing them to 6 runs for 5 wickets, only Ross Fitz-John(24) batting at 9 made double figures enabling ND to avoid total embarrassment. In the end CD taking first innings points by 141 runs.ND where made to follow on by CD needing a further 141 runs to make CD bat again

Auckland vs Otago

Otago; 291 (B Cant 63, M Hunter 58, M Collins 40, T Ellis 3-59, T Brown 2-21, E Herd 2-43) to Auckland; 28-4 of 13 over’s (C Cachopa 18*, S Kruger 1-6, K Russell 1-6)

Otago made a solid start after being put in to bat by Auckland. The two openers sharing a stand of 65 for the 1^st wicket, Ben Cant going on to score a solid 63 of 125 balls. Matt Hunter in the middle order added 58 and Michael Collins at number 9 a handy 40 taking Otago to a very respectable 291 from 88.5 over’s. Auckland’s bowlers stuck to their task with Tom Ellis finishing with 3-59, Travis Brown 2-21 and Elliot Herd 2-43. In reply Auckland finished the day on 28-4 in deep trouble after some excellent late day bowling from Otago.

Wellington v Canterbury

Canterbury; 283 (T Latham 120, M Henry 49, H Nicholls 43, L Boydajian 3-60, M Taylor 2-25, T Gibson 2-55, H Wright 2-69) to Wellington; 73-3 off 21 over’s (M Taylor 31, S Lawson 15 no, T Walsh 1-5)

Tom Latham scored an excellent century as Canterbury made 283 of 78 over’s, his 120 was made off 131 balls. The cornerstone of the Canterbury score was a partnership of 122 for the 3^rd wicket between Latham and Henry Nicholls (43). Matt Henry added a well made 49 at the end of the innings before Canterbury lost their last 3 wickets without addition to their score. The pick of the Wellington bowlers where Harry Wright 2-69 of 25 over’s, Luke Boydajian 3-60, Tom Gibson 2-55 and Matt Taylor 2-25 all made useful contributions with the ball. Wellington resume tomorrow on 73-3 chasing 283 for 1^st innings points. Matt Taylor out late in the day for 31 putting the balance of the game slightly in Canterbury’s favor, much will depend on Sam Lawson 15no overnight.
