Christopher Doig CNZM OBE

The 1995 appointment of Christopher Doig as CEO of New Zealand Cricket was a surprise to many and considered to be out of ‘left field’.

His background was as a pre-eminent international opera singer, and for the prior period 1992 to 1995 he was Director of the International Festival of the Arts, based in Wellington.

Following his appointment, in the short space of just three years he led the transformation of NZC into a vibrant and modern sporting organization. Revenue per annum increased from $6.8 million to $22 million, full time staff had increased from 9 to 33.

His unique passion and enthusiasm for the role became legendary. His wonderful communication skills with all stakeholders were renown. Through his own dynamic leadership the highly regarded Cricket Academy and High Performance Centre was soon established at Lincoln University.

Chris Doig quickly developed an excellent working relationship with (then) Board Chairman, Sir John Anderson. Together they made a formidable team at ICC level. New Zealand Cricket’s reputation as a well managed organization with sound governance structures were strongly respected on the world stage.

Chris Doig is widely respected for being the major force behind the establishment of a Future Tours Program for Test cricket. The FTP remains in place today, and ensures NZC continue to enjoy home and away tours with all top cricket playing nations on a regular basis.

I came to admire Chris immensely during his time as CEO of NZC.

He retired from NZC in March 2001.

Chris Doig was a gifted and talented New Zealander, and will be sadly missed.
