Canterbury wins Under 17 Men's Nationals

The NZC Men's Under 17 trophy has a new home this evening after the hosts in Lincoln proved runaway winners this summer.

After a solid showing across both the two-day and one-day formats, Canterbury Under 17 was the only team with three outright wins, and that meant they finished a whole 10 points clear of their nearest rivals, defending champion Northern Districts and Auckland.

Those two northernmost sides finished in equal second spot, followed by Otago, while CD and Wellington jointly took home the wooden spoon.

Central finished on a thrilling note, however, beating Otago with just one ball to spare in their last one-dayer on Lincoln Green: a one-wicket thriller that saw Jamie Ingram - the son of powerful former Central Stags opening batter Peter Ingram - hit a six to clinch the result.

Canterbury was the only side at this year's nationals to take an outright win in the two rounds of two-day cricket that opened the tournament, beating Auckland U17 by four wickets on Lincoln Green – a match in which Tom Turner took a brilliant haul of 8/54 off just 12.3 overs in the second innings to roll Auckland for 143.
