Buchanan to step down

Australian coach John Buchanan has confirmed he will step down after the 2007 World Cup, and the race is now on to find his successor.

National selector Allan Border confirmed Buchanan's decision in Melbourne newspaper the Herald-Sun, and also suggested India coach and former Australian Test captain Greg Chappell was among a list of possible replacements.

Should Buchanan step down after the World Cup in March, he will have been in the job eight years.

"John has decided that after the World Cup he is going to be moving on," Border told the Herald Sun.

"Therefore we need an Australian coach. It's a tough job.

"Tom Moody, Tim Nielsen, Greg Chappell are in the mix, Dav Whatmore is now coaching Bangladesh and he was a long-term coach at Sri Lanka as well.

"We've got a lot of good candidates for a tough job."

Chappell is considered a strong chance because his contract expires at the end of the World Cup and will not be renewed by the Indian Cricket board.

However both Moody, who coaches Sri Lanka, and Nielsen, who is currently the head coach of Cricket Australia's Centre of Excellence, are considered favourites.

Buchanan has enjoyed numerous successes during his tenure, including the 2003 World Cup triumph in Africa and Australia's world record 21 consecutive one-day wins.
