The 56-year-old will take up the role of General Manager National Selection later next month where he will work alongside BLACKCAPS Head Coach Mike Hesson to select our national men’s sides.
Nominated by a panel including Sir Richard Hadlee, Edgar brings a background in both commerce and cricket to the role. The long-serving Wellington left-hander played 39 Tests and 64 One Day Internationals for the BLACKCAPS between 1978-86 and, since retiring from cricket, has run his own financial consultancy business.

“Bruce is highly respected within the cricket fraternity and he was a very successful player both on and off the field.
“He is considered, methodical and logical with exceptionally good attention to detail. And while Bruce has been recently living in Australia, he’ll be supported in the role by the local knowledge of talent scouts and Major Association coaches.”
A Cricket Australia L3 accredited coach, Edgar has worked in New South Wales’ high performance programmes and has been a specialist batting coach for various Sydney first grade clubs.
Two years ago Edgar became a trustee of the NZ Cricketers Hardship Trust.
Considered one of New Zealand’s best openers he says he’s excited about renewing his relationship with the BLACKCAPS.
“I'm looking forward to working closely with Mike Hesson in what will be an exciting time for cricket fans with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 just round the corner. “
Edgar believes one of the key challenges of the role will be identifying players who have the ability to execute their skills consistently and perform under pressure.
“Players need to be given opportunities to bridge the gap between First Class cricket and the international stage. I would like to see players given experience in the sub-continent and with local conditions in other countries.”
Edgar also places a high value on the character of players.
“Outside of pure statistics, things like team values, work ethic and personal accountability will be closely scrutinised.”
The GM National Selection is one of two selectors for the BLACKCAPS and NZC’s centralised contracts, while also acting as the selection convenor for the NZA and NZ Under-19 sides.
