Boje calls it a day

Former South African vice-captain Nicky Boje has retired from international cricket just two days before the start of a home Test series against India.

The 33-year-old was named in the squad to play against India, but has decided to join Damien Martyn as the second high profile cricketer to retire this month.

"I have decided to retire immediately," Boje said in a statement released by the South African Cricketers' Association.

"I am accordingly unavailable as part of the Proteas squad for this season."

Despite playing 43 Tests and 115 one-day internationals during his career, the left-handed batsman and bowler had played sparingly for his country in the past two years.

With two ODI hundred's to his name, and a Test match 85, Boje had plenty of skill with both bat and ball and will be sorely missed by his team mates.

"I have had 11 years of international cricket and will always cherish wonderful memories of playing for South Africa."

"I wish my former team-mates in the Proteas side the very best and I'm confident that the team has a very bright cricketing future."

Although Boje will not play at an international level in the future, he will continue to play for his domestic side Eagles, in the local South African competition.

Haroon Lorgat, the chairman of selectors for South Africa, is yet to make a decision on who will replace Boje in the 15-man squad to play against India.
