BLACKCAPS open Republic campaign

Shane Bond and James Franklin took a wicket apiece during the first day of the BLACKCAPS’ warm-up match against a Rest of South Africa XI at Benoni.

Franklin, who has agreed to join English county championship side Glamorgan after the tour, also ran out opener Stephen Cook as the hosts were unsettled early.

Michael Papps and Jacob Oram, recalled to the squad ahead of the tour, were included in the team which took the field at Willowmoore Park after the home team won the toss and chose to bat.

The tourists were celebrating shortly after, when Bond bowled Alviro Petersen for two in the third over of the match.

Franklin removed Cook (13), and trapped Justin Ontong (61) lbw.

However, internationals Neil McKenzie and JP Duminy enjoyed a fruitful unbroken partnership to move their side into a strong position.

The pair took the score from 107 for three to 355, both batsmen making 125.

Play resumes at 10 am local time (Spm NZT)
