BLACKCAPS dismissed

The BLACKCAPS face a fight to complete victory in the second National Bank Test against Sri Lanka at the Basin Reserve.

The tourists stood a 221 for five at the end of the second day in Wellington, forging a lead of 362 over their hosts.

The BLACKCAPS were dismissed for 130 in their first innings at the Basin Reserve, 138 adrift a Sri Lanka first-innings total dominated by Kumar Sangakkara’s 156 not out.

Brendon McCullum made 43 provided solid resistance but Sri Lanka bowlers Lasith Malinga and Muttiah Muralidaran were in irresistible form.

Resuming on 66 for four, Malinga and Murali cut through the New Zealanders’ lower order, taking five for 38 and four for 31 respectively.

McCullum posted 43 before he was the last man out, bowled by the spinner.

Sri Lanka began their second innings just before lunch, but neither McCullum or Jacob Oram took the field today after sustaining injuries.

Batsman Mathew Sinclair was pressed into action as an emergency wicketkeeper.

And he took one vital catch after tea to remove Mahela Jayawardene (31) off Daniel Vettori, who was given the bulk of the bowling - 31 overs in all, bearing three wickets for 101 runs.

But that was the only wicket of the evening as Chamara Silva hit his second half-century of the match, on 79 not out, while Prasanna Jayawardene was unbeaten on 22 as the visitors progressed.

Earlier, Vettori picked up two wickets in the session, with Chris Martin and Shane Bond also striking for the BLACKCAPS as they claimed four early wickets.

Those included Kumar Sangakkara, who could not make it three successive centuries as he fell for eight, caught by James Franklin on the boundary at point off Bond.

However, Silva led his side to a greater lead with the BLACKCAPS having five Sri Lanka wickets to remove before they begin their run chase.
