Bangladesh and Ireland shock giants

Bangladesh and Ireland produced two of cricket's biggest shocks on the same day in the ICC World Cup group stage.

Bangladesh completed a five-wicket victory over India at Port of Spain, while Ireland marked St Patrick's Day by defeating Pakistan by three wickets in Kingston.

Batting first, India was dismissed for 191 in the Group B match at Queen’s Park Oval - their lowest one-day total against the Tigers.

Bangladesh quick bowler Mashrafe Mortaza took four for 38, with left-arm spinners Mohammad Rafique and Abdur Razzak claiming three wickets each.

Then, youngsters Tamim Iqbal (51), Saqibul Hasan (53) and Mushfiqur Rahim (56 not out) led their side to their second win over India with nine balls to spare.

The historic win - only their third in the finals – came just days after the death of 22-year-old Test spinner Manjural Islam in a road accident.

Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar said: “It is a memorable day. The boys have done a very good job today. It was difficult to know what to do so it was a good toss to lose. I think we would have had a bowl first anyway because we always thought it would do something in the first overs.

“This is a World Cup victory and it is great for us. It gives us a real chance of qualifying for the Super Eight stage. I think it is a great victory for Bangladesh.”

India counterpart Rahul Dravid added: “Credit to them. They came out and played some shots and their opener got them off to a very good start so that set them up well for the game.”

At Sabina Park, Ireland chased down a Duckworth-Lewis target of 128 courtesy of 72 by ex-Kent wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien.

Boyd Rankin took three wickets and captain Andre Botha took two for five off eight overs as Pakistan were dismissed for 132 inside 46 overs.

O'Brien's younger brother Kevin then steered his side to a dramatic win with an unbeaten 16 off 53 deliveries.

Pakistan, with two defeats from their opening two games, cannot now progress to the Super Eight stage.
