Australia retain World Cup

Australia won their fourth World Cup with victory over Sri Lanka in Barbados.

Adam GIlchrist's 149 helped set up a 53-run victory for the holders, who went through the competition undefeated.

The veteran wicketkeeper's record score led his team to 281 for four 38 overs in a match shortened by rain.

Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara dominated the early stages of the response with 116, both making half-centuries.

But they fell to 206 for seven, and accepted the offer of bad light with three overs to spare.

They returned to the crease minutes later, but there was little chance of avoiding defeat with Australia claiming their third successive title.

Gilchrist said: "It's a really satisfying day and a satisfying finish to an amazing tournament.

"It's closure on some amazing careers, obviously Glenn McGrath, much will be said and he deserves all of it but also John Buchanan. He has been amazing to Australian cricket.

Defeated captain Mahela Jayawardene said: "I thought we played some really good cricket but it was a very special innings by Gilly (Gilchrist) in a final. The way he batted was brilliant.

"Credit to Ricky Ponting and the team, they played some really good cricket throughout the tournament."
