Auckland, who lost to Canterbury yesterday, sent out a strong message that they have found some form after two rounds off the National Women’s Development Tournament, thumping Wellington by 147 runs in a 50 over match.
The Canterbury, the only unbeaten team in the tournament, were also dominant beating Northern Districts by 68 runs while Otago beat Central Districts by three wickets to register their first win.

Auckland piled on 272 after winning the toss and electing to bat in the second round match against Wellington. An opening stand of 78 between Shanne Elliott (23) and Sarah Carnachan (48) set a solid platform for the middle order to launch from. It was Maddie Green who did just that, pounding a run-a-ball 98 in a superb knock that included just eight boundaries. Some late hitting from the Auckland lower order helped propel them to the formidable total. Wellington used ten bowlers in an unsuccessful attempt to stem the flow of runs with new ball bowler Katie Hoffman’s 2-40 the best of their attack.
Wellington never threatened the total with opener Rachel Chin’s 24 and Tash Narasy’s 29 the only contributions of note. They were not helped by three run-outs as they crumbled to 126 all out in 45.1 overs. Ariene Kelly was the most successful of the Auckland attack with 2-14 while their best bowler from round one, Georgia Guy returned tidy figures of 2-28.

Canterbury notched up their second win in as many days, this time beating Northern Districts by 68 runs. The bulk of the work came from the top order after they won the toss and elected to bat. Hayley Banks hit 42 and Gina Hart 40 before Hayley Jensen top scored with classy 54 to help Canterbury to 218 for nine off 50 overs. Northern bowler Felicity Leydon-Davis was on target taking three Canterbury wickets for 38 runs.
Heidi Arndt got the Northern run chase off to a good start with a fluent 43 but when she was dismissed with 66 on the board the wickets tumbled and they were eventually bundled out in the 41st over for 150. Hayley Jensen, who was Canterbury’s eight bowler used, mopped up the tail to finish with 3-6 off 5.2 overs while four Northern batsmen were run out.

Otago chased down Central District’s total with over five overs to spare and thee wickets in hand to record their first win of the tournament. Central won the toss and elected to bat but struggled with the loss of regular wickets prevented them from creating any momentum in their innings. Number six batter Jessie Bennett hit 24 off 28 with number seven Maneka Singh making a patient 27 off 69 deliveries. A lower order contribution of 48 not out from Sanika Rangnekar helped them through to 173 for seven.
The successful reply from Otago was set up by top order contributions from Rebecca Heenan (25), Sarah Osborne (29) and Lisa Grant (47) who top scored. They got the jitters toward the end of the innings but the lower order kept their cool and guided the team to victory. Central strike bowler Jessie Bennett did her best, taking five of the seven wicket to fall but it was not enough to prevent an Otago victory.
