Asif pulls out of Test

Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif has failed to recover sufficiently from an elbow injury and will miss the first Test against England later in the week.

The Test starts at Lord’s on Thursday and Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer had been hoping Asif would overcome his elbow complaint.

"Unfortunately, he hasn't reacted properly to the injection he had," Woolmer told the BBC.

However, in positive news for the tourists, fellow fast bowler Mohammad Sami and wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal have overcome their battles with injury and both will start the Test.

But Shoaib Malik (elbow) remains under an injury cloud, with the opening bowlers set to be Sami and Umar Gul, with Abdul Razzaq as the likely third seamer.

Leg-spinner Danish Kaneria will also be called upon to provide lengthy spells during the match.

The 25-year-old, who bowled Pakistan to victory with 4-62 in the second innings of the first Test against England at Multan early in 2006, has never played a Test at Lord's and is relishing the prospect.

"Lord's has something special because cricket was born in England and this is a ground where people make their name," he told Bigstarcricket.com.

"I've dreamed about it for years and now it's about to happen, a Test match at Lord's and an opportunity to make my name at the historic ground."
