Allan Donald turns down role as BLACKCAPS bowling coach

Allan Donald has withdrawn from the role as BLACKCAPS bowling coach, advising that he was seeking a position with Cricket South Africa.

Despite verbally agreeing terms and committing to the role, Donald contacted New Zealand Cricket on the weekend and advised of his change of heart.

New Zealand Cricket CEO Justin Vaughan said it was a disappointing decision.

“We did everything possible to retain Allan but it is understandable that a role in South Africa would be attractive to both him and his family,” Vaughan said.

“Unfortunately that is the nature of professional sport and although I understand the reasons for Allan’s decision, it is disappointing considering the positive discussions we had with Allan about moving to New Zealand and his desire to work with the BLACKCAPS.

“It is also a disappointment as he contributed well during the ten week stint he had with the team earlier in the year.

“But there’s no point dwelling on it – we have to focus on the future.  I'm sure there are a number of well qualified bowling coaches interested in the role and I know John Wright is confident of finding a really good replacement for Allan.”

Donald worked with the BLACKCAPS from 18 January 2011 through to the conclusion of the ICC Cricket World Cup on 29 March 2011.
