Wizards win Super Over thriller

Shane Bond proved to be the difference as the State Canterbury Wizards beat the State Northern Knights in dramatic fashion.

The Knights needed 14 off the final over and then one run off the final two deliveries but couldn’t get bat on ball sending the match to a one-over eliminator.

Bond was selected to deliver the “Super over” and kept his nerve as the Knights could only manage six runs.  Trent Boult was the Knights choice of bowler and he was hit for six by Shannan Stewart off his first ball and a single of the next handing the Wizards the win.

Batting first the Wizards amassed 171 with Michael Papps making 39 off 33 and Johannes Myburgh whacking 40 off 24.

Andrew Ellis came in down the order and thumped 20 off 9 to lift the total for the Wizards.

Wiley spinner Bruce Martin was the pick of the Northern bowlers with two for 21 off his four with Joseph Yovich and Te Ahu Davis also snaring a couple each.

The Knights lost early wickets and were looking down and out at four for 39 but Hamish Marshall and Daniel Flynn then combined to put on 92 for the fifth wicket and get their team on track.

Marshall struck a fluent 49 off 34 with Flynn, who was carrying an injury and using a runner, quite incredibly managed 47 off 35 including four fours and three sixes.

Joseph Yovich played his usual cameo finishing with 18 not out with Bruce Martin making 19 off 9.

Andrew Ellis was tidy for the Wizards taking two for 24 while Bond's one for 33 and six run Super over was enough to move him move into fifth place in the State Twenty20 MVP rankings.

The result puts the Canterbury Wizards in outright third and still in the hunt for a finals berth.  The Northern Knights are still without a win after six rounds.
