The Volts took wickets from the outset

Volts stun Stags in season opener

A showstopping impact innings from Cricket Express MVP Tom Bruce wasn’t enough to get the Devon Hotel Central Stags a home win as Georgie Pie Super Smash 2015 launched at New Plymouth’s Pukekura Park.

Scorecard

In perfect conditions, the SBS Bank Otago Volts dominated the Stags from the outset, making regular breakthroughs until Taranaki local Bruce stepped up to the plate batting at five in his Georgie Pie Super Smash debut.

Taranaki's Tom Bruce did it again at Pukekura

Bruce smashed an unbeaten 82 off 51 balls at his favourite ground, including six fours and four sixes, to help lift the Stags from 26/3 to 137/8 in their 20 overs.

Paceman Warren Barnes, on debut for the Volts, impressed with 3-33 of his compliment, backed up by an allround team effort from the Volts’ attack.

Neil Broom and Anaru Kitchen’s opening stand of 74 in reply ensured the Volts were never under pressure as they ticked off the target, Andy Mathieson taking 3-18 but unable to stop a six-wicket defeat.

The Volts and Stags don't have long to wait for a rematch with their next encounter at Yarrow Stadium this Saturday night, while the SKYCITY Northern Knights host the Canterbury Kings at Hamilton’s Seddon Park in a televised match 7.10pm on SKY tonight (Friday).
