The SBS Bank Otago Volts have held onto their lead on the Georgie Pie Super Smash table after today’s top-of-the-table clash with the Mondiale Auckland Aces resulted in an abandonment.
Despite clouds clearing at University Oval, rain earlier in the day left part of the ground unfit for play — elevating the Aces to second on the table and a two-point margin over the SKYCITY Northern Knights and Canterbury Kings.
Despite their lead, the Volts are not yet mathematically assured of making the Finals in New Plymouth next weekend. However, a win in their final regular season game of the competition — away to the Knights at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Sunday — would cement a spot.
Five teams remain in contention for the 2015 title, and tomorrow evening’s match between the fifth-placed Devon Hotel Central Stags and the Mighty Ape Wellington Firebirds at McLean Park, Napier, is an important opportunity for the Stags to join the mid-table contenders on 18 points.
The match is LIVE on SKY Sport from 7.10pm.
