After having stumbled in their first round against Northern Districts, defending champion the Auckland Aces headed to Canterbury’s country lair looking to bounce back, up against one of the hottest teams of the summer.
But things were about to get worse for the Aucklanders, who were now without their captain Robbie O’Donnell who missed their second match with illness, Ben Horne taking over the skipper’s duties on a fresh deck in Rangiora.
Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Ish Sodhi and Matt Henry all featured in a strong Canterbury playing XI and home captain Cole McConchie had no hesitation in putting the Aces in.
Latham was already a joint holder of the Canterbury record for most dismissals in an innings, a mark that stood at five and shared with Lee Germon, Kruger van Wyk and usual incumbent behind the stumps, the injured Cam Fletcher.
Latham was about to go clear on his own as the Canterbury attack seared through the Aces’ line-up.
He pouched six catches behind the stumps as the Aces stumbled to their second stinging defeat in as many games, Canterbury meanwhile staying at the top of the table with another bonus point win.
Henry Shipley was again impressive with a tidy 3-14 off his eight overs as the Aces were bundled out for 162 in 44.1 overs.
Canterbury made light work of the chase, opening batsman Chad Bowes unbeaten on 85* and Henry Nicholls contributing a quick 40 before Bowes and Latham brought home the win in just 20 overs, for yet another bonus point.
Canterbury maintained top spot on the ladder, and the Aces would need to wait again for a first victory this summer.
