King's School and Huntley School won both their matches on day one of the National Primary School Cup finals in Lincoln.

Medbury School 145-7 (H Sharr 55, S May 44, H Patel 4-15, J Bidois 3-21) beat Tauranga Intermediate 39 all out from 8.4 overs (H Anderson 4-10, C Huntley 3-12), Lincoln Green
Jonty Bidois followed up his five wickets from round one with another three to rock the Medbury top order reducing them to 17-4, with fellow opening bowler Harsh Patel who took four wickets. Partnerships will often turn a game and this was certainly the case in this game. The loss of the fourth wicket brought together Harry Sharr (55 off 49) and Seb May (44 off 36) who compiled a 103 run partnership for the fifth wicket, to push their school to a respectable 145-7. The momentum created by that partnership then flowed through into Medbury’s bowling. Tauranga never got themselves into the innings, with Hamish Falls-Anderson claiming four and Ciaran Huntley capturing three wickets to bowl out Tauranga for just 39. An excellent all-round performance from Medbury.
Huntley School 64 all out off 18.2 overs (O McVerry 21) beat Raroa Normal Intermediate 45 all out off 18 overs (G Pearce 4-9, J Allpress 3-7), Lincoln No. 3
A gripping affair played out on Lincoln No. 3. After dismissing Huntley School for 64, with all six bowlers using claiming wickets Raroa Normal Intermediate would have been confident of securing their second victory of the day. Huntly had other ideas, quickly reducing Raroa to 17-8 after 7.1 overs. The chief destroyers were George Pearce and Josh Allures, who claimed 7 wickets between them. A ninth wicket partnership of 28 wasn’t enough, with Bryson Campbell claiming the final two wickets to claim their second victory on day one.
King’s School 150-5 (N Tapper 50, A Hart 3-16) beat Southland Boys’ High School 45 all out off 13 overs (N Tapper 3-6), Bert Sutcliffe Oval
An excellent all-round performance from King’s School captain Nick Tapper sealed a second victory on day one. Winning the toss and electing to bat brought Nick Tapper to the crease and he proceeded to dominate the Southland Boys’ High School bowling attached scoring 50 off 34 balled including 11 boundaries and being an excelling opening partnership with Jonny Willis who was the first to fall with 80 runs on the board. King’s progress was slower by some excellent bowling from Aaron Hart who claimed three wickets, but Kings managed to register the largest total of the tournament to date with 150-5. Tapper continued his excellent match claiming three early wickets while conceding just six runs from his three overs. The King’s bowlers kept things tight, picking up regular wickets and Southland Boys’ were eventually dismissed for 45 after 13 overs. King’s head into tomorrow with two wins, while Southland will be looking to get themselves on the board.

Raroa Normal Intermediate 140-9 (A Thompson 43, T Ettema 36) beat Medbury School 119-9 (J Inglis 29, J Wilkinson 2-22), Bert Sutcliffe Oval
Raroa Normal Intermediate of Wellington and Medbury School of Canterbury commenced their tournament and had first use of the Bert Sutcliffe Oval. Despite losing some early wickets Raroa built a challenging total of 140 with Alex Thompson building an excellent better than a run a ball 43. He was ably supported by Theo Ettema who compiled 36 runs off 26 balls. Medbury struggled to make inroads into the required run rate with regular wickets taking Raroa’s total out of reach, eventually falling 22 runs short.
Southland Boys’ High School 90-9 (H McVerry 4-7, F McVerry 3-18) lost to Huntley School 92-2 off 10.3 overs (O McVerry 37), Lincoln No. 3
Southland Boys’ High School batted first against Central District’s Huntley School, and set 90 for 9. Accolades go to Fred and Harry McVerry claimed 7 wickets between them with both bowlers unable to convert hat trick opportunities. In reply Huntley Oscar McVerry was the standout with the bat, producing a knock of 37 from 23 balls. The target was easily achieved off just 10.3 overs giving Huntley a first up victory and a great start towards improving on their fifth place finish from 2016.
Tauranga Intermediate 114-10 (H Patel 31) lost to Kings School 118-7 off 19.4 overs (J Bidios 5-7), Lincoln Green
King’s School have returned to the National Primary School Cup finals in 2017 following their third-place finish in 2016 looking to start their tournament in a positive manner against Tauranga Intermediate. Tauranga Intermediate batted first on Lincoln Green and got off to a fast start posting 35 runs off the first three overs. Captain Harsh Patel lead from the front with 31 off 35 deliveries including 5 boundaries. Regular wickets fell through the innings limiting Tauranga ability to push for a score of 120-130. King’s lost early wickets and appeared to be teetering at 30-4, but solid contributions from Sam Clegg, Cam Fletcher and Josh Olliver left 4 runs required from the final over. This was achieved with two balls remaining despite an outstanding bowling display by Jonty Bidois who achieve the excellent figures of 5-7 from his four overs.
