Indian celebrate a wicket in the 5th ODI

India clinches ODI series 3-2

In short
What had been a very even series finished with a blowout.

After posting a 269 run target, India’s spinners ripped through the BLACKCAPS batting line-up to help secure a commanding 190 run victory and a 3-2 series win.

Leg spinner Amit Mishra did the major damage claiming 5 for 18 and was named man of the series for his 15 wicket tally over the five games.

Scorecard

Scene set

Locked at 2-all with history on the line - there was a noticeable edge to the start of ODI game five in Vizag. Normal service resumed at the toss as India won the flip and mixed it up by choosing to bat first as well recalling Jasprit Bumrah and introducing debutant spinner Jayant Yadav. Kane Williamson brought Corey Anderson back into the XI in place of Anton Devcich.

Stalemate start

India didn’t want to lose wickets, the BLACKCAPS didn’t want to give away runs. Both came close to achieving their goal, with India 45-1 at the end of the mandatory 10 over opening power play.

India build

You might have heard of a guy called Virat Kohli. He averaged 111 at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium (mouthful) coming into the match and is a pretty handy number three. The Indian vice-captain once again controlled the tempo of his side’s innings, putting on partnerships of 79 with Rohit Sharma and then 71 with captain MS Dhoni for the second and third wicket. The launchpad was set.

Santner stifles

Mitchell Santner came to India relatively unknown to the sub-continent, but his sleet-arm orthodox has left many impressed. He delivered once again in the decider, bowling 10 over for just 36 runs and also claimed the prize wicket of MS Dhoni for 4. His spell took the sting out of the Indian middle order and ensured they wouldn’t threaten a total of 300. Santner’s spell meant he leaves as the first New Zealand spinner to complete 45 overs in a series with a run-rate of less than four per over.

Finishing fracas

There was a good battle between bat and ball down the home straight of the Indian innings. While not easy to find the boundary rope, Kedhar Jadhav and Axar Patel closed out the innings with some good running between the wickets and a couple of lusty blows which gave India the upper-hand and the BLACKCAPS an intimidating 270 to chase on a challenging wicket.

Early trouble

The Vizag crowd got an early eruption as swashbuckling opener Martin Guptill was knocked over by peach from Umesh Yadav. Similar to the dismissal in game two - to was an absolute brute of an out swinger that started angled in at leg stump and swerved to take the top of off stump.

Ross and Kane
The BLACKCAPS premier pair came together at 2 for 28 and set about trying to be the glue to what they hoped would be a successful run chase. They managed to put on 35 before Williamson (27) took on long off and lost. The wicket triggered a collapse.

The collapse

Taylor followed his experienced mate Williamson not long after and that would start a procession of batsmen commuting in and out of the middle. 8 for 16 would be lost as the BLACKCAPS were bowled out for 79… Enough said!

Mishra madness

The loopy leg spinner was too much for the New Zealand middle order. His combination of drift, turn and bounce proved a potent cocktail. After getting Ross Taylor (19) caught behind, he then bowled BJ Watling second ball with a delightful googly. Watllng would be one of three victims Mishra would dismiss without scoring, as the player of the series wrecked havoc on the turning wicket.
