Daily Report – ICNZ Junior Provincials: Day 1

The first day of matches have wrapped at the ICNZ Junior Provincials tournament in Christchurch. Here are the highlights from each grade on Day 1:

Under-17 Boys:

The Canterbury Under-17 boys have made the early running in the Under-17 boys grade, with two good wins over rivals Wellington and Northern Districts taking them into the lead with 13 points.

Northern claimed an earlier win over Auckland to stay in second with nine points, whilst Central Districts, Wellington  and Auckland have each claimed a win apiece to share third place.

Northern Districts have also entered a development side into the grade, who have not yet registered a win in their first two games.

Each side will play each other once. The top four sides from the grade will contest the semi-finals and subsequent finals on Monday.

Under-17 Girls:

The Northern Districts girls are looking like the team to beat in the early stages of the Under-17 girls competition.

They have piled up two 100+ scores with comprehensive wins over Canterbury and Southern Districts whilst conceding under 60 on both occasions.

They took four skins from each game for 16 points in total. Auckland Blue have also started well with two wins in their first two games; the first a comfortable win over counterparts Auckland White, whilst later in the day taking a thrilling one-run win over Wellington.

Canterbury and Wellington claimed a win apiece, whilst Southern Districts and Auckland White (development side) are yet to register a win after two rounds.

Each side will play each other once. The top four sides from the grade will contest the semi-finals and subsequent finals on Monday.

Under-15 Boys:

Seven teams have entered the Under-15 boys grade with Central Districts Green and Southern Districts looking ominous early on; a couple of huge wins for both making their intentions known in the competition.

Central have racked up a staggering 562 runs in their first three games against Wellington, Central Districts White and Canterbury, whilst conceding only 193 in the process. Their three wins have them sitting top with the maximum 24 points.

Southern Districts started with a comfortable 40-run win over Northern Districts, before they put on 180 runs against Central Districts White in their two games to date.

Northern Districts claimed an early win against Auckland, before rebounding back from their loss against Southern Districts with a huge eight point win against Wellington.

There were also wins for Canterbury and Auckland, who fought to a thrilling 113-all tie with Wellington, as the top four sides chase a semi-finals berth on Monday.

Under-13 Boys:

The Under-13 boys grade was split into two pools featuring four teams each, with all pool games taking place on Day 1.

The quarter-finals will take place on Sunday, with 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd from each pool playing off against each other for a spot in the semi-final.

The losers of each quarter-final would contest a separate plate competition, whilst the winners would go on to contest the cup.

Pool A consisted of Northern Districts Maroon, Wellington, Auckland Blue and Canterbury Red. It was Northern Districts Maroon who dominated the group, taking three out of three wins, including 322 runs with the bat and only 115 conceded with the ball.

Auckland Blue picked up two wins to finish second, whilst Wellington took one win over Canterbury to finish in third.

Pool B consisted of Canterbury, Auckland White, Northern Districts Gold and a third Canterbury team, Canterbury Black.

As with Pool A, it was Canterbury who picked up three good wins in the group, whilst the second Auckland side matched the feats of their counterparts by taking two wins for second. Northern Districts picked up a solitary win to finish third.

Day 2 will feature the following quarter-final match-ups to determine the Plate and Cup participants:

Auckland White vs Wellington
Auckland Blue vs Northern Districts Gold
Northern Districts vs Canterbury Black

The semi-finals of the Plate and Cup will take place on the same day, with the finals taking place on Monday.
