DAY FOUR
After another ground delay and an early lunch taken, the Volts resumed at 107/3, with Dale Phillips looking to press on from his overnight 65*.
That he did, reaching 96* by tea - in sight of a potential third Plunket Shield hundred this summer.
However, just two further deliveries were possible in the match before the light packed up again as wet weather moved in.
Phillips had added a single and would finish unbeaten on 97 not out, the Volts 169/6 when play was called off for bad light.
DAY THREE
A century from overnight batsman Chad Bowes helped Canterbury claim a 112-run first innings lead.
The Otago Volts dismissed their hosts just before tea, the innings reaching 369 after Bowes' good work at the top end of the innings was continued by Canterbury's regularly wagging tail - debutant Mitch Hay contributing 62 amid an 87-run stand for the seventh wicket with Sean Davey (55), Will Williams hitting a quick 21, and Fraser Sheat 18.
Bowes had earlier reached his three figures off 167 balls in just over four hours in total, with a dozen of those deliveries despatched to the rope.
His overnight partnership with Jack Boyle had meanwhile hit 98 before Jarrod Mckay grabbed his second wicket, Boyle caught on 43 on his home turf.
That led to a wee flurry of wickets, but from 227/6 Canterbury's handy lower order had contributed a further 142 runs.
By stumps, the Otago Volts were trailing overall by just five runs, at 107/3 in their second dig.
Sheat, Davey and Williams had all picked up a wicket, Nick Kelly falling to the latter just before stumps.
Formhorse Dale Phillips remained unbeaten on 62* and will resume on the final alongside Ben Lockrose who is yet to get underway.
DAY TWO
The Volts' steady progress on the opening day was halted by Canterbury's pace attack, young aggressor Will O'Rourke picking up his best first-class figures yet in his short career, with 3-56.
The opening duo of Will Williams (2-41) and Fraser Sheat (3-55) led the way as the hosts reduced the Volts from their overnight position of 196/4 to 257 all out - an action-packed collapse in time for Canterbury's batsmen to get underway before lunch.
Chad Bowes and Ken McClure got things started with a 56-run opening stand before McClure was caught behind off Jarrod Mckay, Bowes carrying on to finish unbeaten on 79* when bad light again curtailed the day's play.
McConchie had been the only other loss, trapped on 14 by Jake Gibson, with Canterbury set to resume the third day with eight wickets in hand, a further 104 runs to pick off to take a lead, and Jack Boyle (32*) and Bowes looking to build on their 74*-run third-wicket stand.
DAY ONE
On an opening day delayed by a ground delay and curtailed by bad light, the Otago Volts reached a fair position of 196/4 in the 74 available overs, after having been sent in by Canterbury captain Cole McConchie.
Volts captain Hamish Rutherford had led the way for his side with a knock of 70, sharing a patient century stand with first drop Dale Phillips, fresh off his second century of the summer.
This time Phillips reached 63 before he was caught by Sean Davey - making a long awaited return to Canterbury colours - off McConchie himself, at 158/2 in the middle session.
Tall young Canterbury paceman Will O'Rourke stopped Rutherford just a handful of overs later and the visitors packed up for the day at 196/4 with Jacob Cumming and Max Chu getting starts.
