Yousuf has record day

Brian Lara has set himself to bat out the last day as the West Indies start the day 405 from beating Pakistan in the second Test.

On a day notable for Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf breaking Viv Richards' record for most runs in a calendar year, Pakistan declared its second innings at 399-6 leaving the West Indies a target of 444 if they are to tie the series.

At stumps, the West Indies were 39-2 with Brian Lara unbeaten on 18.

Yousuf went into the fourth day 45 runs short of Richards' record of 1710 runs in a calendar year. He achieved that and went on to score 124, his ninth century of the year. Three chances were dropped off him, at 68, 87 and 100.

Richards' record was set in 1976 and Yousuf has extended the mark to 1788 runs. Yousuf also broke the record for most centuries in the year which was seven but which he has extended to nine.

He also joined Don Bradman and Jacques Kallis as the only batsmen to have scored centuries in five consecutive Tests.

Yousuf acknowledged the role coach Bob Woolmer had played in his batting consistency. He told CricInfo, "Since Bob has been with us, he has really sorted out my balance. I used to have some problems with it before but he has really helped me set it properly now and it was a big change."

Mohammad Hafeez also reached his century before falling at 104 while Inzamam-ul-Haq was 58 not out when the declaration was made.

The West Indies were in immediate trouble when Chris Gayle played the ball onto his stumps while Daren Ganga was trapped leg before wicket.
