Wizards slow Volts' chase

Greg Todd’s half-century helped State Otago Volts make inroads into State Canterbury Wizards’ lead at QEII Park, but the hosts ended the day with the upper hand.

Todd’s 53 helped the Volts to 213 for six in reply to the Wizards’ 397, on the second day of the State Championship match.

The Wizards resumed play on 325 for five, but lost the lower half of their attack for 72 runs in 23 overs.

Craig Smith was the most prolific visiting bowler with three for 74, with Kruger van Wyk returning to the crease having retired hurt.

Andrew Ellis accounted for both Wizards openers, but Todd helped move his side back into contention.

However, the race for first-innings points swung back in favour of the home team.

Todd Astle’s late removal of Sam Wells left the visitors with only four wickets remaining and 185 runs to attain.
