Wizards double up on Stags

Michael Davidson took nine wickets and hit a fifty as Canterbury Wizards completed their second State Champions victory in seven days over Central Stags.

After defeating the Stags at Napier last weekend, Davidson enjoyed a fine performance in his only his third first-class match.

The 26-year-old took four wickets in the opening innings, beating that for career-best figures in the second and making his maiden 50 in between.

Michael Mason led a fight back by the tail-end of the Stags’ batting order to boost Canterbury’s winning target.

The BLACKCAPS bowler, returning from injury, scored an unbeaten 39 to lift the visitors to 148, setting a winning target of 88.

Robbie Schaw made 23 and Greg Hegglun 10, but Michael Taiaroa’s absence meant no further scoring was possible.

Mason then stalled the Wizards’ chase for 89 for victory with two wickets, but Michael Papps (40) and Peter Fulton (35) steered their team home with an unbroken stand of 58.
