Wizards and Magicians Captains Named

The two captains who will lead Canterbury’s domestic men’s and women’s sides for the 2009/2010 summer of cricket were announced at the recent Canterbury Cricket Club and Representative Season Launch.

Amy Satterthwaite has been selected to lead the Canterbury Magicians side during their Women’s Twenty20 and 1 Day campaigns, the latter of which they won in the 2008/2009 season. Satterthwaite, who was stand in captain during 2007/2008, takes the reins from White Fern Haidee Tiffen who announced her retirement at the end of last season.

Canterbury Magicians coach Stephen Cunis expressed his delight at having someone of Satterthwaite’s calibre to fill the captaincy role “Amy is a very astute captain who reads the game well. She backs her players to do well in any situation and that is a great quality to have as a captain”.

Canterbury Wizards wicket keeper, Kruger van Wyk, has been named to lead his side for the third season. Leading his side to State Championship victory in the 2007/2008 season and to the State Twenty20 final in the 2008/2009 season van Wyk has been a solid influence on the young side.

“I am delighted Kruger will be the captain of the Canterbury Wizards for the 2009-10. Kruger is a hard worker and will again demand the best from his players and I look forward to working with him in taking Canterbury through the season. With pre-season well under way I have enjoyed the attitude being shown by the players in the lead up to the start of the domestic competition” said Canterbury Wizards coach, Bob Carter, of van Wyk’s reselection and leadership of the team.

The Canterbury Wizards continue their preparation for the forthcoming domestic campaign on Monday 2nd November in a 4 day warm up match against the Otago Volts in Dunedin. The first round of competition will be the following week against the Wellington Firebirds at the Basin Reserve, Wellington.

The women’s competition kicks off on December 4th with a Twenty20 match against the Wellington Blaze at Redwood Park in Christchurch.
