White Ferns defeat defending champs in final warm-up match

The White Ferns have completed their preparations for the ICC Women’s One-Day World Cup in India with a 13 run victory over England.

Following a loss to hosts India on Monday, the White Ferns last night rallied in their second and final warm-up match to overcome a strong English side. The New Zealand side dismissed the 2009 World Cup winners for 210 after 48.2 overs, having earlier made their way to 223 all out after 50 overs.

Sara McGlashan’s 88 was the top-score for the White Ferns, while Lucy Doolan (57) and Nicola Browne (40) also played major roles with the bat. They were backed up by a good all-round effort in the field, with five bowlers amongst the wickets and three run outs also helping their cause.

It concluded a successful build-up for the White Ferns, who recorded a historic two - one Twenty20 series victory over Australia last week.

They now turn their head to the first of three Group B matches, with their first fixture of the World Cup against South Africa on February 1. They then face Pakistan on February 3, before taking on Trans-Tasman rivals Australia two days later.

All Group B matches will be played in Cuttack, with the White Ferns then shifting to Mumbai should they advance through to the super-six and play-off stages.
