Over the next month the New Zealand White Ferns will be travelling all over the country to encourage young girls to get involved in cricket.
The roadshow will visit various regions between Invercargill and Auckland, with a number of high profile players involved. During the tour they'll watch some of the Quikhit tournament, talk about their experiences as a cricketer and inspire their audiences to give the game a go themselves.
Erin Bermingham and Sophie Devine kick off their tour in Christchurch today and will visit Halswell High School, Heaton intermediate, Christchurch Girls High School and Halswell Cricket Club. The following day doesn't get any less busy with events scheduled at Fendalton, Woolston and Sumner.
Up in Auckland Sara McGlashan and Kate Broadmore will not only be talking cricket, but watching it too. Their trip coincides with Quikhit – a girls only NZC initative.
Quikhit is a series of tournaments which are designed to try and lure more players to the game. McGlashan and Broadmore will visit Henderson Intermediate tomorrow to cheer on the players, before heading to the Ellerslie Cricket Club on Wednesday to do the same.
McGlashan, who is not only a White Fern but also the Women's Development manager at New Zealand Cricket, said the opportunity to interact with the younger players was an exciting one.
"What we really want to do on this trip is to inspire the girls who are already playing to continue doing so and attract girls who aren't playing to give it a go," McGlashan said.
"Cricket has provided so many awesome opportunities for me and it's important that young players know that they can experience that too. The more people who get involved, the better things are going to get for women's cricket in New Zealand."
