Watson ruled out

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson will not play in the first Ashes Test against England after being withdrawn from the squad with a hamstring injury.

Batsman Michael Clarke is now fully included in the squad and is expected to come into the No.6 position.

Australian selectors were keen for Watson to play in the first Test, but he strained his hamstring in a Ford Ranger Cup one-day match against Western Australia last week.

Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris confirmed the news after the team's training session on Tuesday afternoon.

"Shane Watson has been ruled out of the first Test with a hamstring strain," Kountouris said.

"He has been working hard over the last couple of days to be fit but it became clear during this afternoon's training session that he would not be fit to start the match."

"He will continue his rehabilitation program with a view to being fit for the second Test."

The Australian team will be announced on Thursday morning, just before the start of the first Test at the Gabba.
