Volts to open Sri Lanka tour

Sri Lanka prepare for their National Bank Series against the BLACKCAPS with a first-class match against State Otago Volts at Dunedin’s University Oval.

The tourists' Australian coach Tom Moody (pictured) was gratefully anticipating first-class play after a period of hiatus.

Their domestic season has been plagued by poor weather, and the former Test batsman was eager to head out again after a disappointing performance in the ICC Champions Trophy.

He said: "We have had plenty of net sessions and been able to get outdoors but not out in the middle.

“We were very disappointed about not being able to advance further in that tournament."

Marvan Atapattu has been rested from the longer matches of the tour, although Moody addressed no other concerns.

Otago coach Mike Hesson is pleased to get back to home soil and have the opportunity of taking on the talented visitors.

He said: “The players were particularly keen to get in that side for the game. They don’t just want to play, but also perform well.

“And it’ll be good to get back to the University Oval, which the guys love. Test matches could easily be held there. It’s a good facility and we love playing there.

“Everyone’s looking forward to it. Hopefully Murali will play and that’ll be a great experience.”

Hesson will check the conditions before announcing his side, although pace bowler may be rested.
