VIDEO INTERVIEW: Peter McGlashan after playing Australia in the warm up match

 Peter McGlashan
The BLACKCAPS wicketkeeper-batsman about the playing Australia, the No. 7 batting spot and batting with Scott Styris.

On what the BLACKCAPS can take from the match…

"They got the result but there’s definitely something positive we can take out of it. Our top order has done reasonably well in the warm up games up until now and for the lower order to get tested is probably a good thing long term with the tournament starting properly on Saturday."

On the No. 7 batting postion being up for grabs…

"According to the media it is yes, I only read about it this morning but some of the questions Ross got asked on it. The reality is we’ve got so many guys that can fill it, so many guys that bowl, guys like Jake have batted there before, Franklin, myself, guys like Nathan McCullum. We have a lot of guys that bowl in that position back home so whether its seven, eight, or nine all of them have had that role in the past so all of them can do it."

On his personal performance…

"It was nice to take the opportunity and it was one of those situations where we had nothing to lose. We were in a fairly precarious position so to do well and take advantage of that was nice.

On the nerves…

It was a difficult situation we’ve been talking about throughout the campaign that we’ve got enough ball strikers that we can just continue to go for the whole 20 overs. When you’re 21 for 5 that stretches that theory a little bit but once Scott and I got going I’ve played some first class cricket with him back home and we managed to get up to what was a competitive score in the end."

On batting with Scott Styris…

"Scott has a huge amount of experience. We went through the academy together back in New Zealand so it was good to have him out there he’s obviously played against the Australians plenty of times before but it was my first game against Australia so to have him out there was a calming influence."

On Twenty20 giving him the opportunity to play for the BLACKCAPS…

"I think it has. I’ve played for the Under 19s and I was in the side that played in the World Cup in South Africa. I started playing first class cricket quite early but didn’t secure a spot on the first class side until about five years ago for Northern Districts so my one day cricket been going well since I got back into first class cricket and this formats been ideal for me to have a go at this level. It has been something that I focused on and it was completely unexpected to be here. Mum and Dad had already booked tickets because my sisters in the White Ferns so it has worked out quite well that were here at the same time."

On facing the Australian pace attack…

"It just seemed like there was an endless supply of bowlers but I guess that’s what happens when you play against 13 people. There was a difficult track we knew that when we trained here the other day so we knew to expect that but when you’ve got guys charging in and bowling at 140 ks an hour its difficult to allow for the fact your on a slow pitch. If the balls flat and heavy its still going to get to you pretty quickly they all bowled well."
