Tourists progress after rain delay

Kumar Sangakkara helped Sri Lanka recover from a shaky start as their tour of New Zealand got underway against State Otago Volts after a rain delay at Dunedin.

Sangakkara (pictured) struck an unbeaten half-century to help his side to 141 for three at stumps, having been slow out of the blocks when the match eventually began.

Wet weather wiped out the morning session, with the players taking the field after a post-lunch inspection.

Otago coped best with an afternoon start to the match at the University Oval, striking early to remove veteran Sanath Jayasuriya.

bowled Jayasuriya with his first ball, the opening delivery of the match’s second over.

Impressive tyro Upul Tharanga made only 19 before he followed his elder colleague back to the pavilion, bowled by for 19.

Captain Mahela Jayawardene and Sangakkara came together and put on 86 for the third wicket, before the skipper went for 48, caught by counterpart off .

Sangakkara survived an early appeal to move to 51 when bad light stopped play after 36 overs, with Tillakaratne Dilshan 14 not out.
