Former New Zealand women’s all-rounder Haidee Tiffen has been appointed the White Ferns head coach, effectively immediately.
Tiffen, previously an Auckland Hearts and assistant White Ferns coach, will step into the role vacated by Hamish Barton earlier this year, in a contract that extends to the end of the 2017 women’s Cricket World Cup.
NZC Head of Cricket Lindsay Crocker said he was delighted to announce Tiffen’s addition to the White Ferns environment.
“Haidee was a passionate and successful international player and has carried those qualities into her coaching career,” said Mr Crocker.
“We’re very pleased to have someone of her experience and familiarity with the landscape taking on this very important role.”
Tiffen, whose first competitive assignment is likely to be a tour to India in the New Zealand winter, said she was excited to be part of a group that played such an important role in her life in previous years.
“It feels like this team is a part of my DNA – I always had an ambition to coach it at some stage, and I’m thrilled that time has arrived,” she said.
“I’m a really proud kiwi, and I’m excited to have the chance to work with, and help grow the games of, such a talented group of sportswomen.”
Tiffen retired from international cricket after leading the White Ferns to the final of the 2009 women’s Cricket World Cup, having played two Tests, 117 One Day Internationals and nine T20Is for her country.
Her playing CV includes a women’s Cricket World Cup winner’s medal in 2000; captaining the White Ferns to the final of the 2009 tournament (in which they lost to England), and retiring with a Test batting average of 124.00.
More recently the Head of Department, PE and Health at Kelston Girls High, Tiffen will also take on the role of White Ferns chief selector.
