Scott Styris’ half-century concluded a high-scoring second Test at Newlands as the BLACKCAPS shared a draw with their hosts South Africa.
Styris made an unbeaten 54 as the tourists’ second innings was ended at 127 for three after 37 overs by bad light in the match’s final session. Jacob Oram was eight not out at play‘s end.
The BLACKCAPS ended 202 runs ahead after adding to their imposing first innings of 593 for eight declared.
Michael Papps (20), Peter Fulton (11) and Nathan Astle (14) were the three New Zealanders dismissed.
James Franklin took three wickets in the morning to threaten the hosts, but Ashwell Prince (108) remained resolute for his fourth Test hundred.
Resuming on 427 for five, Mark Boucher (33) was first out, caught by Stephen Fleming off Franklin.
The left-armer then trapped Nicky Boje, but Prince remained and cautiously reached his hundred off 259 balls.
Dale Steyn (13) was less stubborn, enticed into a charge by Daniel Vettori and being unceremoniously stumped by Brendon McCullum.
The Proteas were soon dispatched, though, Makhaya Ntini (11) was run out by Astle after a mix-up attempting a quick single saw him alongside Prince at the bowler’s end, handing McCullum the simplest of tasks to end the innings.
Franklin finished as the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, following up his maiden Test century with his three for 95 off 33 overs.
Jeetan Patel took three wickets from his first Test innings, while had taken three wickets and Daniel Vettori two, the vice-captain drawing level with Chris Cairns on 218 Test wickets.
BLACKCAPS captain Fleming was named the man of the match for his ground-record innings of 262.
The BLACKCAPS now head to the third and final Test in Johannesburg on Friday intent on levelling the three-match series.
